British Society of Aesthetics Annual Conference 2011
16 September -
18 September 2011
Keynote Speakers: Catherine Wilson (University of Aberdeen), Rachel Zuckert (Northwestern University)
Empson Lecture: Stephen Bann (University of Bristol)
Old College, University of Edinburgh
Our 51st annual conference takes place at Old College in the beautiful and vibrant city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Built in the sixteenth century, William Playfair's impressive landmark is the birthplace of the University of Edinburgh. The Old College quadrangle houses the stunning Playfair Library Hall - the venue for most of the conference sessions, refreshments and meals - and the Talbot Rice Gallery which hosts contemporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Accommodation will be in the nearby Kenneth Mackenzie Suite (Richmond Place) or at Masson House (Pollock Halls), a 10-15 minute walk. All rooms are en suite. Delegates who do not require accommodation should make their own arrangements.
An optional excursion to Little Sparta, Ian Hamilton Finlay's masterpiece of landscape, sculpture, and concrete verse in the Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh, closes the conference. The £20 cost includes return transport, packed lunch, and site fees. Our coach leaves at 12:30, immediately after the final conference session, and delegates will be dropped off at the conference centre or at Edinburgh Waverly Train Station around 16:30. Important notices: (1) Tickets for the excursion are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. (2) There is a walk of 700 metres on a rough cart track from the car park to the site and the site itself requires walking. The excursion is unsuitable for people with mobility or breathing difficulties. (3) For those who wish to take photographs, there is a fee of £5 payable (by cash only) on the site.
Early registration fees: full conference package £280 including accommodation (students £140) or £180 without accommodation (students £90). Little Sparta visit £20 extra (limited availability). Early registration ends 15 August. For later bookings the standard registration fees will apply: £320 (£160) including accommodation or £210 (£105) without accommodation.
